Examining Judo especially its classifications of techniques.

There are many excellent books (EG: Kodokan Judo by Jigoro Kano [amazon.com/....]) and websites (EGs: Techniques of Judo [judoinfo.com/techjudo.htm] and Judo technique [W]) that cover judo techniques. This page is a minor rehash mostly for my own benefit. Note also that there are many more techniques in wrestling and grappling, and many ways to organize techniques, but judo does a nice job of collecting and organizing important techniques.

The official Kodokan throwing techniques

First a little historical background:

• 1895: Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo and the Kodokan, established the Gokyo no Waza or formal throwing techniques of judo. There were 42 techniques.
• 1920: The Gokyo no Waza was modified by removing 8 techniques and adding 6, leaving 40 techniques. These 40 were divided into 5 groups of 8 techniques each, and the 5 groups were taught in a specific order.
• 1982: The 8 techniques removed in 1920, called habukareta waza, were added back in. Also 17 new techniques called the Shinmeisho no Waza were added. There were then 65 techniques.
• 1997: 2 techniques were added to the Shinmeisho no Waza. There were a total of 67 techniques.
