Technician: Can he currently strike you with a lunge?

Caller: Yes, he's already hit me twice... I'm bleeding a bit from
the shoulder. That's why I called you.

Technician: You should have told me that first. I need you to
immediately retreat out of distance.

Caller: Ok... I have retreated... He seems to have relaxed a bit.

Technician: That's good. I need to know if your opponent is clever.

Caller: **Loudly aside** Hey, are you clever or what? **Into the
phone** He says he isn't clever.

Technician: I want you to assume the guard and cover the inside line
with your blade. Turn your point towards his forward shoulder
aligning your edge so that you cover his blade with your strong
against his weak.

Caller: Ok... this seems to be working. I think he might be
impressed or something. He might even be afraid. I love fencing!

Technician: Now, he should execute a cavazione and try to strike you
on the outside high line. Be ready to counterattack by rolling your
hand into secunda, closing the line and counterthrusting. Are you
ready?

Caller: Ok.

Technician: I want you to gradually move forward with tiny steps
directly towards him.

Caller: Ok... I'm taking tiny steps... He hasn't done anything yet.
I think it may be working. Oh oh... he attacked the outside just
like you said!! I'm counterattacking!! Ahhhh Ahh ohhh ohhh!! He
feinted!! He feinted!! He parried my counterattack!! I'm bleeding
again!! Yes.. I'm definitely bleeding!! I hate fencing!! I hate it!!

Technician: Calm down. Calm down! I need you to listen to me. I need
you to retreat out of distance again.

Caller: Ok... Ok... I'm retreating. He relaxed again. What would
happen if I rushed him? Would that work?

Technician: It would probably work for him.

Caller: What does that mean?

Technician: Don't worry about it. Here's what you need to do.

Caller: Ok, I'm ready.

Caller: Yes.

Technician: Can you see the adversary?

The Dark Knight (2008) novie comes out today so it makes sense to post something Batman related. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) [W] comic by Frank Miller was a totally different story, but pretty dark too. It's set in an alternate future where Superman has become a government yes-man and Batman has to fight him. Someone made this animated gif that captures the essence of the story and uses Christian Bale (who co-stars in today's movie along with Heath Ledger) as Bruce Wayne. As in the usual Batman v Superman stories, Batman usually wins because he planned something ahead of time.

How to set tax rate on Kensington keypad calculator

A few days ago I ordered and received a "Kensington Notebook Calculator with USB HUB", Model K72274. It's a wonderful piece of hardware that truly just plugs in and plays. It only works when it's plugged into a computer and the laptop is on, which is just fine. My laptop's NUM LOCK button had to be off in order for the keypads NUM LOCK to work, which is also fine. The buttons on the Kensington are typical for a keypad (0-9, 000, ., /, *, -, +, BS, ENTER, NUM LOCK) as well as for a typical for a calculator (M+, M-, +/-, MR, MC, %, TAX+, TAX-, TAB, AC/ON). There are two buttons not typically found on a keypad or calculator: A "PC/CAL" button that switches it from PC-mode to calculator-mode, and a "Send" button that sends the current value to the computer as if you had typed it in and hit ENTER.

All good. However, setting the tax rate for use with the TAX+ and TAX- buttons is a process that varies between different models of calculators. I spent perhaps 20 minutes trying to figure it out myself but the I had to go. Later I decided to just search for the answer instead of wasting my time trying to figure it out.

I consulted the manual that came with the Kensington but it had no help. I dug up the manual [http://files.acco.com/KENSINGTON/K72274US/K72274US-24882.pdf] but it was exactly the same as the printed manual. I scoured the Kensington site for any FAQs, troubleshooting, etc. I searched Google for stuff like "how to set tax+ tax- calculator" or "how to set tax rate keypad", which turned up results such as holding down the % button for a few seconds, enter the tax rate, and then press the % button via something like ftp://61.218.39.140:1000/Manual/CKP-70H%20manual.pdf. I tried all that but nothing. Eventually I went to the Kensington site and started a trouble ticket.

Their first was response was to tell me to call them. So I called --several times. The support was obviously overseas. There were a few disconnects which (I felt) occurred because the issue was not in their knowledge base so the support staff pulled the plug. The one woman who was finally brave enough to see the problem through a bit further decided that she would send me a new one. Well, that's nice but the thing isn't broken --it just needs a better manual. So I continued the trouble ticket at the site and got an email giving me the same instructions that I pulled from Google!

AAAARRRRGGH!

So I was back to square one with trying to figure it out and hoping that the engineers actually made it possible at all. I was on the right track on my first attempt a few days ago, so it only took me a few minutes this time.

Here is how to set the tax rate on a Kensington keypad calculator:

  1. Click AC/ON.
  2. Click Tax+.
  3. Press and hold Tax+ until the display flashes.
  4. Enter the tax rate.
  5. Click Tax+.

Boo-yah! In your face Kensington! Don't get me wrong, I love the product but the manual needs a bit more info.

The debate skit is funny but the Palin skit is funny and painful because they used words actually spoken by Palin. There are so many articles out there wincing about the Palin and Couric interview. Couric was being nice, Couric was giving Palin opportunities to shine, but all Palin could do was stumble on talking points. If I were prone to believing in conspiracies, then I would propose that this is all a ruse by Palin in order to make the Democrats let their guard down. If not, then it is frightening to think that the GOP machine has such power that it can dupe half the country into wanting Palin to become one 72 year old's heartbeat away from becoming President. There are college kids who know more about the issues than Palin. For the security of America and the world, I sure hope that it is all a ruse.

They have discovered but one portion of my fire-breathing technique! Yes: I consume the bacon/prosciutto and store it about my waist. (Krispy Kreme will do as well)

However they missed two key parts: I have learned special breathing techniques that allow me to expel pure oxygen, and I am also able to generate a spark in my mouth by using strawberry flavored Pop Rocks. Thus I can, upon command, combine the bacon with the pure oxygen in my sinuses, then I light it with the Pop Rocks spark as I rapidly expel it.

The effect is almost as good as laughing while chocolate milk is coming out of my nose.

Call the guy crazy all you want, but listen carefully to him and you realize not only does he make a valid legal point, he's non-violent, he composes an improvised song while being pinned down by two cops and then *runs away* while being **tazed** and actually takes the time to tell them he considers it self-defense. Dude seemed pretty with it to me. What I want to know is why he was being pinned to the ground by two cops in the first place. And did he get caught?

I want to know how the cops were not able to cuff him? Too much pressure from knowing they were being video taped?

Way to go dude! The revolution has begun! I liked these two comments in the Reddit thread:

Stage 1 - "Haha, look at that guy over there, he looks like a fool"
Stage 2 - "Look, that other guy is making fun of him, let's all point and laugh"
Stage 3 - "Hey, another has joined in making fun of the dancing dude, boy he must be embarrassed, what a tard!"
Stage 4 - "Hmm, there's more people dancing now, what a bunch of followers"
Stage 5 - "Wow, everybody is running over there to dance! I now stand out because I'm NOT dancing"
Stage 6 - "Wait for me! I want to dance too!"
I've done quite a bit of sociological research on the psychology of crowds. What you see in the video is actually a good example of the kind of population distribution needed to, say, start a revolution. The populace can be so incredibly anxious to join in (in a revolution, they'd be pissed and angry, here, they want to dance and have fun), but you still need the first person, or the first few couple people, to actively participate without the safety net provided by numbers. (In revolutions, these guys are either the traitors or patriots, depending on the outcome, and their existence can be caused by any number of factors, from economic status to religion to traditional beliefs to, well, anything that could get them to stand up against authority.) This is typically the stage where large movements either stall out or start to actually have an effect. This was just dancing, but it's a microcosm for how a lot of societal changes in general actually work.
Stage 7 - "I always thought dancing dude was cool! I was going to join him earlier, but you guys beat me to it."
