20080330 180719 Z Activity, Family, My Stuff, Relations My wife and I have been thinking of socializing with other folks besides our usual circle of friends. We initially looked at stuff like couplets.com and couplesworldwide.com, but I think the idea seemed too much like a singles thingy so we let it slide. Now we're trying out meetup.com which is for meeting people in particular localities for almost any reason you can think of. While online social networking is "interesting", it's very virtual and nothing beats meeting people face-to-face.

Squirrel v Daisy Powerline 901 air rifle

We've had problems with squirrels in our attic for months now. Julia in particular has been awakened at night with their noise and she's been concerned about damage to our house. We didn't want to use poison because we don't want dead squirrels stinking up in some unreachable corner of our attic. We had guys come out with traps last fall: They caught one but they came back. In 2008-02 we bought our own trap and we managed to catch one ourselves. We hadn't considered the issue of disposal. Julia didn't want to release them far away (in case they might come back). I offered to stab them with a sword but Julia thought that was too crude. So we settled on shooting him with an air rifle.

Because of Chicago gun lawys, it's annoying to order any sort of gun or gun related items online. So Julia called around for a K-mart that sold them and she went out and got one. She ended up getting the Powerline 901 air rifle by Daisy. It's a multi-pump air rifle that shoots either BBs or pellets at up to 230 m/s = 750 fps. It's a decent model and I think my friend Nikos has the exact same thing.

I tried a few shots at the squirrel from a 2 m = 2 y, but either I'm a terrible shot or the squirrel was one tough little guy. I had to put the gun pretty much point blank above its head: One shot did the trick. The wife and kids watched through the window while I handled the whole thing (including the mildly smelly and bloody clean up). The kids were fascinated before hand but once the deed was done they stated that they would rather not participate next time. A rather dismal little affair all around, but it had to be done.

The rifle is in its box in the closet. I intend to have the kids learn gun safety and marksmanship with a safe backstop once the weather clears up. The squirrels are back. The war goes on.

Chicago-sized chunk of ice has fallen
Antarctic ice shelf 'hanging by a thread' [http://environment.newscientist.com/article/dn13530-antarctic-iceshelf-hanging-by-a-thread.html]

A city-size chunk of the Wilkins Ice Shelf has actively and visibly collapsed in just a few days.

Wilkins Ice Shelf collapsing 2008-02-28/2008-03-08

For reference, I took a screenshot of Google Maps of the Wilkins Shelf (70°15'S, 73°W) and of Chicago on the same scale:

Wilkins Ice Shelf via Google Maps on zoom 7 Chicago via Google Maps on zoom 7

For reference, Chicago is 606 sq. Km = 237 sq. miles, so roughly a Chicago-sized chunk of ice has fallen into the ocean. All together an area around the size of Rhode Island (4002 sq. Km = 1545 sq. miles) is expected to fall in.

Web Forms
Web Forms [http://www.georgehernandez.com/h/xComputers/Webs/Forms/]
It took me a few days but I re-did my pages on form-handling. I used to have it in my ASP section but really it's a mix of ASP, HTML, JavaScript, security, and databases, so I moved it to my Web section. I'm getting a kick these days of using JavaScript for both client-side and server-side coding. Thanks to all the work I've been doing with the Ext JS [extjs.com] library, I now love passing JSON objects as a parameter for functions. I also spent a few days with Halock [halock.com] reviewing security, so I jotted down some notes and implemented some stuff. It includes my dual-validation library for both client-side and server-side that works in a very similar way on both ends.

JavaScript StripTags, not PHP strip_tags

All I wanted was a little JavaScript function that could strip tags from HTML. I'm sure someone else must have done it before. But no! Instead all I found on the Web were a bunch of PHP programmers bragging about their little strip_tags($str [, $allowable_tags]) function [http://us3.php.net/strip_tags]. Almost as bad were all the JavaScript programmers doing a weak implementation of strip_tags(), but without the allowable_tags parameter.

So I decided to make a JavaScript version of the PHP strip_tags function. I could've made my function do the exact same thing, with the same name and parameters, but I went a step further and made a few custom tweaks:

Here's the code for StripTags(str [, IsAllowed [, SpecifiedTags]]]), my variation of the PHP strip_tags, as well as the comment stripper.

//CREATOR: http://www.georgehernandez.com
function StripTags(strMod){
    if(arguments.length<3) strMod=strMod.replace(/<\/?(?!\!)[^>]*>/gi, '');
    else{
        var IsAllowed=arguments[1];
        var Specified=eval("["+arguments[2]+"]");
        if(IsAllowed){
            var strRegExp='</?(?!(' + Specified.join('|') + '))\b[^>]*>';
            strMod=strMod.replace(new RegExp(strRegExp, 'gi'), '');
        }else{
            var strRegExp='</?(' + Specified.join('|') + ')\b[^>]*>';
            strMod=strMod.replace(new RegExp(strRegExp, 'gi'), '');
        }
    }
    return strMod;
}
function StripCommentSGML(strMod){
    //Thanks to: http://www.faqts.com/knowledge_base/view.phtml/aid/21761
    strMod=strMod.replace(/<!(?:--[sS]*?--s*)?>s*/g,''); //double dashes escaped cuz of SGML comment
    return strMod;
}

If you want to see the code in action, then check out my little Parse Text form where I implement it and a few other things. BTW: Yes, this code can be used on the server-side with ASP.
